SmartMedia is one of the most convenient and affordable memory formats currently available for digital cameras. Stamp-sized and credit-card thin, Toshiba SmartMedia acts like a roll of film - able to take up to 40 images per 2MB of memory. Users can capture up to 80 images with a 4MB card and up to 160 images with an 8MB card. The cards can be re-used thousands of times, allowing for a virtually unlimited number of images. SmartMedia also costs significantly less than other types of flash memory. The reason is that SmartMedia is pure memory; Toshiba does not build a controller chip into each memory card.
