Enterprise Policy Manager identifies traffic flows for a variety of applications and services. It can then mark the flows for priority based on source or destination IP address; source or destination IP port; IP protocol; inbound DiffServ Code Point; VLAN ID; VLAN Tag, or; User-specified 802.1p prioritization. The organization relies on its network. Network downtime results in missed commitments and lost opportunities. The security capabilities, filter change alert, and secure shell communications supported in Enterprise Policy Manager give network managers additional tools needed to improve and maintain network security. Establishing policies that meter traffic can prevent denial of service attacks. For example, many denial of service attacks occur when too many packets of a certain protocol type (such as ICMP) flood a device. With Enterprise Policy Manager, network managers can design and deploy policies to control dangerous or unauthorized traffic flows such as peer-to-peer sharing or streaming media. As organizations consolidate servers and optimize their use of new applications and services, there is increased demand placed on the network. Enterprise Policy Manager provides policy provisioning and closed-loop analysis tools so that network managers can control and assess the impact of new policies on applications and services in the network- this ensures acceptable levels of performance and reliability for all business functions. Nortel has co-developed a Proactive Voice Quality Management (PVQM) solution with NetIQ. This solution is a critical component in converged networks as it gives the network manager the capability to measure the 'user quality-of-experience' for all IP telephony communications. It also provides a system health status for IP telephony server components. Forwarding to ENMS of any performance degradation or fault conditions detected by the NetIQ Vivinet Manager in this PVQM solution helps to ensure quick troubleshooting and speedy fault resolution. This workflow uses Enterprise Policy Manager to validate and define or deploy filters to support network QoS for IP telephony traffic. Now network managers have a methodology for ensuring the total quality of their IP telephony deployments.
