Compaq's newest introduction for creating the SAN infrastructure is the StorageWorks Fiber Channel SAN Switch 16-EL. This unit joins the SAN Switch 8-EL as an economical, but robust, device for the price-sensitive customer looking for the market leader in price/performance. The Fiber Channel SAN Switch 16-EL has all the high-performance functionality of Compaq's 16-port SAN switch with fewer high-availability features in a cost reduced, entry-level, full-fabric switch. All ports are based on hot pluggable GBICs, ready to accept short-wave or long-wave interfaces to cover distances up to 500 meters or up to 10 kilometers. All ports are also configurable as E-ports for switch-to-switch connectivity.
